Sjoerd Rijpkema, Friday 17th November

Friday was the “free” day for all of us. For some of us a day to do some extra research, for others the chance to explore more of the island on land or water. Two groups did activities, the largest went snorkeling in the middle of the Atoll. They saw lots of beautiful fish and even sea turtles as well as witnessing some of the coral bleaching which is affecting the region. Meanwhile another group of three students went diving. Today was also the day that Bob finished his special project. During the week he had collected our waste and the result is the word Paradise on the beach, written with sticks, waste, coral and gutters. Each grouping of items represented the different issues affecting the islands, namely: rising sea levels, coral bleaching, pollution and erosion.

In the evening it was time for the EXTREME evening, known to the Dutchies as “bonte avond”. With questions and assignments seven different groups were challenged. All of the groups prepared a joyful and entertaining act and the evening was a great success.
